Before Rachel, Jesse had never really gotten attached to any of the girls that he had casually dated. None of them were really worthy of his attention or affections for the long term. But Rachel changed everything.

It seems ironic that Rachel was the one who taught him about love. It wasn't that he didn't know what love was but he had never really experienced it before. Rachel turned his whole world upside down and made him want to be with her all of the time. Even after she had cast him along with Puck and Finn in her “Run Joey Run” video.

Still it had seemed easiest to run away, to take a week away from her, to spend time with Vocal Adrenaline to get his priorities straight again. Yet for the week that he's away, he can't get Rachel out of his mind. What's worse was that during the whole week, Shelby had left him messages urging him to finish his work. She wasn't in favour of Jesse forming any permanent attachments to her daughter.

So he played the part that he had been assigned, careless of the fact that he was breaking his heat along with Rachel's during the process. Things would get better once he returned where he belonged and assigned Rachel to his past. Yet they didn't get better, they got worse. None of his former friends trusted him, it didn't matter that Shelby had backed him up. The fact that they had all seen the truth written in his face when they had egged Rachel Berry made him untrustworthy.

Now he was in California, starting a new school, leaving behind the ghosts of his past yet he still can't purge Rachel Berry from his heart. She taught him how to love and how to lie and how to pretend. And now he'll have to somehow manage to live with a hole in his heart that's in the shape of her. There's no way that he'll go back on his lies now and tell her that he still loves her, present tense and not past tense.
